San Juan Chamula, MX - Indigenous Village

As unworldly, misty and mysterious as is San Cristobal de las Casas - San Juan Chamula without question takes its fanfare away. With a list of prohibited photo ops a mile long, I elected to use my "nearly broken" camera to capture a few, least it get confiscated or broken as many do. Still inside the pew-less church with over 4000 burning candles, shamans and chicken blood lettings, the mystery of it will have to remain.

The citizens work hard to keep out the US drive to "civilize" their village and they are moderately successful, as those from here who adopt the "christian" ways of the evangelists are banished to small lean-tos outside the city of San

With the ongoing money pouring into this area to "convert" these people to the "proper way", this culture, the final Maya descendants, will be dead in the near future.

Such a surreal and humbling experience to peek into what life must have been like here centuries and centuries ago, while marveling the fact that it seems to continue mostly unaltered, well outside of the coke cans, bluejeans and cowboy hats of course.
