San Juan Chamula, MX - Indigenous Village

As unworldly, misty and mysterious as is San Cristobal de las Casas - San Juan Chamula without question takes its fanfare away. With a list of prohibited photo ops a mile long, I elected to use my "nearly broken" camera to capture a few, least it get confiscated or broken as many do. Still inside the pew-less church with over 4000 burning candles, shamans and chicken blood lettings, the mystery of it will have to remain.

Celebration at the church is almost ignored except by the participants, as the "big day" is down the road in Chamula today.

The dress is different here (see the blouses and men's colors). They identify the religious beliefs and ways of the village Zinacantan to others where they visit.

The central church at Zinacantan. Here they do have pews and not any chicken sacrifices.

More catholic oriented but still a tribal based religion.
