Celestun - Small Fishing Village - Western Yucatan

One of the last of the get away from it all small fishing villages on the Gulf coast is Celestun. About 6,000 people live in this authentic little town, a 3 hour drive west of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and light years back in time from Cancun.

The main drag. This has a couple of stores on it, around 3 cheap hotels and 3 restaurants. From here it heads north by the vacation rental homes and on into the nature reserve a few miles north of the city.

Celestun appears mostly a weekend break for Meridans. Monday finds only 4 on the beach.

This candle burns each night at the corner telephone pole. Remembrance of a lost family member who in the past fatally collided with it. Tomorrow it's the 5AM bus to Merida, Cancun and Holbox.
