Celestun - Small Fishing Village - Western Yucatan

One of the last of the get away from it all small fishing villages on the Gulf coast is Celestun. About 6,000 people live in this authentic little town, a 3 hour drive west of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and light years back in time from Cancun.

I underestimate the time to get to Celestun. It took 6 hours from Campeche due to so many stops of the Merida/Celestun run. At 7:30 I grab dinner at the only open restaurant in town where dogs are also welcomed.

This is where the fishing boats come in and sell their fish in the evenings and where the boat captains pick up anyone who wants to go see the flamingos (well worth the trip).

The pier looked interesting from a distance. When I arrive I see why the 3 fishermen on the end have stopped fishing!
